What Are Rain Chains?

Rain chains are a decorative alternative to having a closed gutter downspout at the end of your gutter system. They commonly consist of a series of cup-shaped objects trailing down from your gutter connected by a chain. Rainwater will collect in your gutters as usual and come out into the rain chain, at which point it will fall from one cup into another, creating an aesthetically pleasing water fixture like a temporary fountain.

These rain chains come in a variety of designs that are as unique as the manufacturers that design them. The practice originated in Japan hundreds of years ago, where the passage of water from the roof to the ground was transformed from a simple journey from point A to point B into an event meant to bring a touch of beauty to a dreary, stormy day.

Rain chains are usually less expensive to install than traditional downspouts, and they’re a great way to express your own style and add a touch of beauty to your home even when it isn’t raining. However, there are a few things to consider before investing in a rain chain:

  1. First, know that they are less durable than downspouts, and they may be damaged by high winds as well as rainfall that is too heavy.
  1. Second, rain chains may be too heavy for some gutter systems, contributing to wear and tear on the system in the long term.
  1. Third, due to the fact that a rain chain is an open system that relies on falling water, there may be some splashing outside of the chain on patios and the like.
